More and more schools are assigning more and more homework – which usually means more and more textbooks carried home in backpacks by kids. This would be tough enough for teens, but even younger children often have to deal with overly heavy backpacks. It's very, very important that parents look out for their kids, and older teens and college students look out for themselves and their peers, by preventing the strain and pain in the first place. Marsch Chiropractic Center in Orangeburg has some advice for you.
You have to address three different things (at a minimum) when trying to prevent back pain from heavy backpacks. One is the weight of the pack. The heavier the pack, the more likely it is to cause stress and strain in the spine and shoulders.
The second is the pressure the backpack puts on the person's shoulders and back. If the weight of the pack isn't evenly distributed, then even a light pack can place excessive stress on a person's back and shoulders.
The third is the person's posture. Poor posture when carrying the pack only adds to the strain, and poor posture when using a phone or computer makes the situation worse.
You can remove a lot of this strain by using (or having your child use) a wheeled backpack. You should also have the child go to a chiropractor (or go yourself, if you're the student) to learn how to pull the wheeled backpack properly; many people let these packs lag behind them, placing undue strain on the shoulder and arm. Our chiropractor can also show them how to properly position the pack when they wear it as a backpack as well as good posture for phone and computer use.
